What to wear when out paddling can be a bit of a minefield. There are so many different kit options from wetsuits to drysuits to cags, it can all get a little overwhelming. Read on for a bit of advice on picking what to wear when you head out on the water.
A couple of key things to remember:
Check the weather. Windy gusts, surprise showers, cloud cover, can all bring the temperature down quickly and dramatically.
Dress for a swim. You never know when you might end up in the water, and being appropriately dressed for immersion is key.
Good quality base layers will help to keep you comfortable on the water. Thin layers that wick sweat away from your skin are a great starting point.
Depending on the season or the weather, a waterproof cag and trousers can be really useful for keeping the wind or rain off, and you warm and dry.
In summer, you may be able to get away with base layers and a cag, but in the winter a wetsuit or drysuit may be needed.
A buoyancy aid is a must have whenever you head out on the water. It is important to assess what safety kit is best suited for the paddling you will be doing.
For whitewater, this will include a suitable, well fitting helmet.
Your local kayak shop is usually a great place to start! They can give you the specialist advice you need, and make sure everything fits you just right.
